Where did you study abroad and why did you choose this destination?
I studied abroad in Valladolid, Spain. The program I chose was the best of both worlds for me. I got to shadow in a Spanish hospital and talk to many providers and have plenty of leisure time to explore. I got to practice my Spanish and go out in Valladolid to experience everything it has to offer. The town is the perfect size and I’m so glad I got to experience it.

What did you enjoy most about being abroad?
This sounds silly, but one of my favorite things was how tax was already included in the price. Genius! I also loved that siesta is a thing in Valladolid, so I could come home from shadowing and take a nap. Tapas are another great thing about studying abroad. I also was surrounded by gorgeous architecture regularly and it was amazing to see.

What did you discover about yourself from your study abroad experience?
It helped me discover that I do have the capability to be so far from home yet feel at home. It also helped with my confidence in speaking Spanish to people who aren’t Spanish teachers or professors. Everyone was super understanding and patient.

What surprised you most about your study abroad experience?
What surprised me most was how great public transport and having a walkable city is. I would take the bus every day to the hospital and back. The bus was always on time and very efficient. Valladolid is also very walkable. I’m from a small town where there is zero public transport and very few sidewalks to places like grocery stores.

What advice would you give to Butler students who are considering studying abroad?
Do it. Seriously. If a whole year or semester feels too daunting, try a shorter program. My program was only two weeks, and it was the best time I’ve ever had. There is a program out there that will work for you and plenty of scholarships to help make it possible. Just take the leap.
