Butler’s Honors Program provides unique opportunities, fosters a sense of community, and helps to create lifelong learners. Meet Ava, a Butler Honors student who has gained valuable experience through the Honors Program.

What has been the best part about being an Honors Student at Butler?
I have thoroughly enjoyed the classes I have taken as an Honors student. Each one has been based on a unique, nuanced topic that explores perspectives and experiences outside of my major. These opportunities to challenge myself and expand my knowledge have shaped me into a well-rounded and empathetic person.

Which Honors Program faculty member has inspired you the most and why?
Dr. Etzler has been a great inspiration to me during my time at Butler. I have never met someone so kind, confident, and excited to learn and engage with others. Her kindness and encouragement were instrumental to the completion of my first year. I aspire to confront life in the optimistic and curious manner Dr. Etzler exhibits.

What advice would you give someone who is considering joining Butler’s Honors Program?
To some, the Honors Program simply appears to be extra work with minimal payout—at most, you receive a special designation at graduation. However, I would challenge those with this mindset to consider the non-tangible benefits. Through the Honors Program, I was able to meet my best friends at Butler, experience the tight-knit community that I missed from my hometown, and expand how I process the world through introductions to unique topics and perspectives. The Honors Program has profoundly affected my experience as a Butler student and scholar, and I would encourage anyone to apply.

How has the community around you—faculty, staff, peers, or the Honors Program community specifically—helped you see your potential differently?
I came to Butler as an Exploratory Studies student, so I was not confident in my ability to pursue a challenging major. However, after interacting with Butler’s staff and professors, I was encouraged to trust myself. I also witnessed fellow students persevere through their academic struggles to earn their degrees and get into amazing graduate programs. The community at Butler helped me reflect on my capabilities and gave me the confidence to pursue art history even though it seemed daunting.

How has Butler helped prepare you for your future career or next steps?

Butler has prepared me academically through their rigorous programs. What is more significant to me, however, is that Butler taught me how to ask for help. During the big transition from high school to college, I was offered numerous helping hands from staff, professors, and faculty-in-residence. I felt so encouraged to seek help in a challenging time and was welcomed when I did.

What’s the story that you tell friends or family when they ask what Butler is like?

The story I tell of Butler is one of care. Every professor or staff member I have met cares about their students, and each person is an individual rather than one of many. Everyone is invested in your success, and this investment continues to encourage me to pursue art history despite its challenges.
