Butler University, Hylant, and Parkview Health announced four finalists advancing in the Healthy Care, Healthy Costs Innovation Competition—an initiative designed to reduce preventable healthcare costs and improve outcomes for high-risk populations through scalable, forward-thinking solutions.
At the semifinal pitch competition on August 28, Bedside Bike, an early-stage mobility company that transforms hospital beds into exercise devices with a bedside attachment, won the $10,000 prize.
Bedside Bike can reduce healthcare costs by keeping patients active and preventing the expensive complications of immobility, such as blood clots, falls, and pressure sores that extend hospital stays. By helping patients maintain their strength during hospitalization, Bedside Bike can enable faster discharge and reduce costly readmissions, delivering measurable savings.
“The Bedside Bike team is thrilled and honored to partner with Parkview, Butler University, and Hylant to create a future where hospitalized never means immobile. This recognition validates our vision of helping patients stay active, prevent complications, and reduce long-term healthcare costs,” said Neil Jairath, Co-founder and CEO of Bedside Bike. “We are committed to empowering patients in their recovery journey because mobility shouldn’t stop at the hospital door. Keep pedaling!”
The initiative launched at the “Total Cost of Care Data Challenge” earlier this year at Butler University, where ten student teams analyzed Medicaid patient data from the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration to uncover significant contributors to rising healthcare costs. Their findings underscored the human and financial toll of preventable health issues across Indiana and were used to create the challenge focus.
Sixty-five competitors submitted applications to the innovation competition, with nine moving forward as semifinalists. They participated in an incubation sprint to refine their solutions before pitching to a panel of distinguished judges. Along with the winner Bedside Bike, three other companies were selected as finalists: Kilele Health, Septo, and Theramotive.
“Innovation is key to addressing the preventable drivers of healthcare costs,” said Ethel Massing, Director, Parkview Strategic Enterprises and Innovation, Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation. “We are proud to support startups like Bedside Bike and the other finalists, whose solutions have the potential to improve outcomes and transform care delivery in Indiana and beyond.”
Over the next two months, finalists will participate in an accelerator program where they will:
- Collaborate with leaders from Butler, Hylant, and Parkview Health
- Gain exposure to executive leaders, funders, and potential customers
- Prepare to pitch directly to healthcare adopters
The competition concludes on November 20, when finalists will showcase their solutions during a live, in-person event at Butler University. The public is welcome to attend the event for free. To register, visit: 2025 Healthy Care, Healthy Costs Final Pitch and Networking Event
