Where are you interning and what are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I am interning at Amazon as an Area Manager Intern. My daily responsibilities involve overseeing facility operations, managing a team of associates, ensuring that orders are processed efficiently, and maintaining safety standards. I also work on identifying bottlenecks and optimizing workflows to improve productivity and meet key performance metrics.
How does this internship relate to your major?
This internship closely aligns with my major in Marketing, specifically product marketing. Although the focus is on operations management, I get to see how products move through the supply chain, from storage to delivery. This offers insights into inventory management, product placement, and how logistics influence the customer experience—all of which are essential for a product marketing role.
What do you like most about your internship?
I enjoy connecting with people across different parts of Amazon and utilizing the company’s vast resources, especially the mentoring opportunities. These programs have allowed me to engage with both the operations and corporate sides of Amazon, which has enhanced my overall perspective. I’ve met leaders from various sites who have been very supportive and provided valuable insights that have significantly contributed to my growth as an intern and student.
Each day presents new learning opportunities, which keeps the experience fresh and engaging.
What project are you particularly proud of?
A key accomplishment for me was leading a project to address a significant bottleneck in a key performance metric. This metric is vital to the KPI Olympics, so it was highly rewarding to develop solutions and offer recommendations that directly addressed these challenges and helped us meet our goals.
What are your career goals and how is this internship preparing you?
My career goals involve pursuing a role that combines strategic thinking, creativity, and understanding of customer needs. This internship has been an incredible opportunity, not just for the hands-on experience, but also for the connections I’ve made. Networking with various Amazonians has exposed me to different facets of the business and it has offered me insights and guidance from professionals who excel in their fields. These interactions are helping me build a strong foundation for my future career, as I learn from their experiences and apply that knowledge to my own growth.
What advice would you give another student who may be looking for an internship?
My advice to other students is to seek out internships that align with their major and push them out of their comfort zone. Be open to roles that might seem unrelated at first because they can provide you with valuable skills and insights. Networking, being proactive, and showing a willingness to learn will make you stand out during your internship search and while on the job.
