What made you decide on Butler during your college search?
Many things, but the biggest was the ease of double majoring! I didn’t really narrow down my interests for what I wanted to study before coming to Butler, so easily having multiple majors between different colleges was a huge deal. I believe that was most important to me in hindsight.
What’s an experience you’ve had at Butler that you don’t think you’d find anywhere else?
I’ve had the great opportunity to participate in undergraduate research with a professor in the Philosophy program. I’ve also been helping translate old pedigrees from the 600s. This research illustrated to me how interconnected our liberal arts community on campus is, and I can easily find what interests me regardless of my major.
What is your favorite part of being a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) so far?
The faculty! Everyone in LAS supports not only your education but also encourages your curiosity. All of them come from a myriad of backgrounds, and each has something unique to offer. I’ve had conversations with professors in their offices purely to satisfy personal curiosity in a subject matter entirely unrelated to my classes, and they’re always happy to help.
What project, class, or experience are you most proud of?
My First-Year Seminar was called “From the HeARTland.” It was about local artists and authors. Part of the class was visiting exhibits and places in Indianapolis. My favorite visit was the Indy Arts Center. There is a nature walk with art installations made by local artists. That’s when it clicked for me that not only would I enjoy being a Butler student, but I would also enjoy being a member of the Indianapolis community during my time here!
How has Butler and/or LAS helped prepare you for your future career or next steps?
At Butler, everyone is looking out for your success. I’ve mentioned how helpful the LAS faculty is, but that’s not the full extent. All the staff and faculty are there to support my education and career advancement. The Student Success Center and the Career and Professional Success Office (CaPS) have been more helpful than I could have ever imagined before coming to Butler. There is an exhaustive list of resources available to us.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of studying a major in LAS?
Take the opportunity to get involved in your classes and get to know your professors. The easiest way to maximize your learning is to ask questions. It might feel awkward at times, or you may feel like it’s a stupid question (it’s not, I promise), but you won’t be able to grasp complicated concepts if you are left on the ground floor.
