For more than 30 years, Butler has been awarding the Morton-Finney Diversity Scholars Program Award to students who have invested intentional time and energy in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in their schools or communities.

Why did you apply for the Morton-Finney Diversity Scholars Program?
I applied to the Morton-Finney Program because I believed the experiences and leadership skills I developed in high school aligned with the program’s mission. I was eager to continue pursuing my passion for community service on campus.

What have you gained as a member of the community within Morton-Finney and how has this program made you feel?
I’ve made friends who share my passion for community service and DEI, and the program has also introduced me to incredible organizations within the Indianapolis community. It has made me feel more connected to the area around Butler, whether through volunteering at the local MLK Center or other activities.

What types of programs, events, or volunteering have you done during your time in the program?
I’ve volunteered at the local MLK Center and organized events for my sorority on important topics like learning ASL. Additionally, I collaborated with the Desmond Tutu Peace Lab, where we brought together high school and college students to address social justice issues.

What advice would you give to an applicant for the Morton-Finney Diversity Scholars Program?
One piece of my advice would be to showcase your passion for community service, leadership, and DEI. Be authentic and show how your unique perspective can contribute to the program’s mission.
