Kyle (McKinley) Rosebrough ’75, MS ’78, received a scholarship to attend Butler–a gift that laid a foundation for a meaningful career and a fulfilling life. Along with earning her undergraduate and graduate degrees in education, Rosebrough says she developed vital life skills during her time at Butler, including personal responsibility, time management, and leadership. After 44 years serving as a kindergarten teacher, Kyle and her husband, Dennis, began reflecting on the kind of legacy they wanted to leave. Together with their financial advisor—also a Butler graduate—they chose to direct a planned gift to Butler in the form of a scholarship for students studying early childhood education. 

Why is Butler special to you?

Butler provided to me an excellent education in a great learning environment with outstanding professors in the classroom and opportunities for personal growth during my college life. 

How did your Butler student experience shape your life?

As with many students, I was literally on my own for the first time when I started my freshman year at Butler. In addition to the life skills of personal responsibility and time management, I was able to develop leadership skills through participation in campus activities like Homecoming and in my sorority. 

What prompted you to think about documenting a planned gift?

My husband and I had several conversations with our financial advisor, who happens to be a Butler alum, about what kind of legacy we wanted to leave. We both value higher education and decided that is where we would focus our bequests.

Why did you choose to direct your gift to support student scholarships? 

I was fortunate to receive a very generous scholarship when I attended Butler. My husband also received scholarship support for his college education. We chose to repay that generosity by providing scholarship funding for future Butler students. As a kindergarten teacher for 44 years,  I wanted to direct the scholarship to Early Child Education majors.  

How did documenting your planned gift make you feel?

We are very thankful to be blessed with resources and believe that we are directed to be good stewards of these gifts.   

How was the process of documenting your gift and working with Advancement?

From the first phone call to the Advancement Office to the final document signing, our Advancement officer was both professional and personal. In our first meeting, he learned about our interests and our connections to Butler. He then proposed a scholarship plan incorporating current giving and a bequest that met our giving goals.  

Do you have any advice for someone considering a planned gift to Butler?

Because there are many options for planned giving, we recommend that you meet with a representative from the Advancement Office. Together, you can find the best giving plan that aligns with your interests and your personal situation.
