The story of Crispus Attucks High School is a difficult part of Indianapolis’ racial segregation history. The documentary showed that even though this school was “designed to fail,” it succeeded by most measures.

“We had a security guard outside our house, my mom had to put the lunar samples in a safe at the bank, and she had a band on her arm that was hooked to the briefcase that held the rocks.”

The program came about because superintendents find themselves dealing with budget cuts, increased class sizes, and socioeconomic conditions that require them to operate in an environment of rapid change and uncertainty.

The Richard W. Guyer Professorship in Education was established in 1997 by D. Michael Hockett, a 1964 graduate of Butler University and an Indianapolis businessman who was deeply influenced by Guyer’s teaching and guidance.

The scholarship will be awarded annually beginning next fall to a student enrolled in the College of Education.

When the federal Department of Education went looking for ideas on how to prepare teachers in early November, one of the places it sought out was Butler University’s College of Education.

Butler University is represented twice in the Indiana State Museum’s new exhibition Indiana in 200 Objects, a celebration of the state’s 200th birthday, which will be on view through January 29, 2017.

Indianapolis Public Schools has named Micah Nelson MS ’11 its 2017 Teacher of the Year.

Ena Shelley, Dean of Butler University’s College of Education (COE) since 2005 and a professor in the College since 1982, has been selected to receive the Edward C. Pomeroy Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teacher Education from the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE).
