Jack Leman
Major: Healthcare and Business
Employee Benefits Consultant, Gibson Insurance

What is your current position and how did Butler help you build the skills you use now?
I’m an Employee Benefits Consultant at Gibson, helping organizations navigate risk, design smarter benefits strategies, and make decisions that impact both their people and their bottom line. My role consists of relationship building, problem-solving, and providing strategic guidance.

I developed these skills at Butler. I started out studying pre-med, but eventually discovered the Healthcare and Business major—a perfect intersection of my interest in healthcare and my drive to understand the business side of it. Butler gave me the space to pivot, explore, and build a foundation that felt authentic to me.

Looking at where you are today, how did Butler help shape that path?
Butler shaped my path by giving me both direction and permission—direction through the academic rigor of the Healthcare and Business program, and permission to pivot when I realized the pre-med track wasn’t the future I wanted. It also exposed me to the broader world of healthcare beyond clinical roles. I learned how organizations operate, how decisions are made, and how much opportunity exists on the business side of the industry. That experience opened the door to my first role in medical device sales, which eventually led me to my career today in employee benefits and risk management.

More than anything, Butler taught me how to navigate uncertainty with confidence. I didn’t leave with a perfectly mapped-out plan, but I did leave with the mindset, relationships, and skills to pursue opportunities that aligned with who I wanted to become.

What’s something you discovered about yourself while you were here?
During my time at Butler, I realized how much I value community. I love connecting with people, building friendships, and forming genuine relationships. The small classes, the tight-knit campus, and the way Butler is woven into the city all helped me find some of my closest friends and the people I still want in my life today.

Looking back, what experience at Butler ended up being more influential than you realized at the time?
The professors were some of the most influential parts of my Butler experience. Every professor I had genuinely cared about their students—not just academically, but personally. That level of investment showed up in the classroom, in how they pushed us to grow, and in the support they offered even after graduation.

I’m especially grateful for Dr. Amy Peak. She helped me navigate one of the biggest pivots of my college journey and guided me through everything from building my class schedule to thinking strategically about internships, networking, and my future career. She wasn’t just an advisor who answered questions—she helped me see possibilities.

What are your future career goals?
Long term, I aspire to lead an insurance agency from a President or CEO seat. I’m energized by strategy, people development, and building something that lasts, and I see myself eventually guiding an organization at that level. I also want to stay connected to Butler in a meaningful way. The university played such a formative role in my life. I’d love to give back as a board member or trustee someday to support the next generation of students and pay forward what was invested in me.

What advice would you give a prospective student who’s considering Butler?
If you want a school that truly invests in you academically, personally, and professionally, Butler is that place. Small classes, mentorship from professors, and a tight-knit community create an environment where you’re known, supported, and challenged to grow. Don’t be afraid to pivot, try new things, and follow what genuinely excites you.

If you lean in, build relationships, and take advantage of the opportunities around you, you’ll leave with far more than a degree—you’ll leave with direction, confidence, and lifelong connections.
