Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, inaugural Dean of Founder’s College, has been named a recipient of the 2025 Freetown Village “Making a Difference” Award. She was honored at the organization’s 12th Annual Awards Fundraising Dinner on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, held at the Madam Walker Legacy Center Ballroom in Indianapolis.

Each year, Freetown Village recognizes individuals who are creating meaningful, positive change in the community—those advancing education, shaping policy, uplifting neighborhoods, and opening doors of opportunity for others. This year’s four honorees exemplify that mission:

  • Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty – A trailblazing academic leader and inaugural Dean of Founder’s College at Butler University, celebrated for championing educational access and transformational pathways for learners
  • Claunick Duronville – A rising leader in law and community engagement with Quarles & Brady, recognized for using his legal expertise to amplify the voices of marginalized communities
  • Robin Winston – A distinguished business and political strategist who became the first Black chair of a major political party in Indiana, honored for decades of service in public outreach, government relations, and strategic leadership
  • Faith McKinney – An author, speaker, and visibility expert whose personal journey and advocacy have empowered individuals to claim their voice and purpose

The “Making a Difference” Award celebrates individuals whose work reflects Freetown Village’s core values: fostering positive change, strengthening communities, and advancing opportunities for learning, leadership, and cultural understanding.

Founded in 1982, Freetown Village, Inc. is a “living history museum without walls” dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and teaching African American history and culture in Indiana. Through educational programs, storytelling, performances, workshops, and community events, Freetown Village brings history to life while inspiring dialogue, understanding, and social responsibility.

Dr. Gentle-Genitty’s recognition highlights her deep commitment to accessible, student-centered education and her leadership in launching Founders College—an innovative model designed to expand opportunity for learners across Indianapolis and beyond. Her work aligns closely with Freetown Village’s mission to foster informed, connected, and empowered communities.
