Marketing, Applied Business Technology double majors; French minor
Intern at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Seattle, Washington
Where are you interning and what are your responsibilities?
I assist the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) Marketing Department with promoting IMS events. My tasks have included writing content for the website and planning Community Day—bringing all 33 drivers of the Indianapolis 500 to elementary schools across the city.
How does this experience relate to your major?
This internship has given me great practical application for my Marketing major. Through my daily tasks and observing the staff around me, I have learned so much about project management and the importance of keeping a consistent brand voice.
What do you like most about your internship?
I love how hands-on the internship is. There is always something to do and when things get busy, everyone—no matter how high up—is always willing to jump in and get their hands dirty.
What project are you most proud of?
I am really proud of the Community Day that I have planned. I have activities planned with 11 schools across Indianapolis to educate children about the Indy 500 and get them involved with drivers. Planning has been a lot of work—coming up with fresh ideas, budgeting for each school, meeting with each school as well as sponsors—however, I know when the day in May comes it will be very rewarding.
What has surprised you the most about this experience?
I was pleasantly surprised by how much all of my supervisors believed in me. I often struggle with being confident in my work, but my supervisors have built me up and helped me be more independent.
What advice would you give another student who may be looking for an internship?
I would say not to get upset when you don’t get an offer. It is really hard not to take it personally but ultimately, you will end up where you need to be.
