Founder’s College at Butler University offers two-year associate degrees designed for Indianapolis-area students. Students can choose from in-demand programs in business, healthcare, and youth and community advocacy—and because Founder’s College was designed for students with limited financial resources, financial aid is expected to cover tuition, fees, books, a laptop, and even a meal plan. Students learn alongside other peers at Butler, get support from dedicated professors, and graduate ready to launch a career or continue on to a four-year degree.

What were you involved with in high school and/or what are you most proud of from your high school career?
In high school, I was heavily involved in NJROTC, Amor Movement, Stand for Children, and Empowered Families. Through NJROTC, I learned valuable leadership skills, discipline, and most importantly, you get out what you put in. With Stand for Children, I had the opportunity to oppose bills at the State House and gain a deeper understanding of politics and advocacy. And at the end of my senior semester, I got involved with Empowered Families, where we target bringing parents and families together on issues in the education system. Amor Movement is where everything truly began for me—it provided me with guidance and mentorship as a first-generation student.

How did you first hear about Founder’s College at Butler University?
I first heard about Founder’s College through the nonprofit organization Amor Movement, since it allowed me to tour the campus. During my visit, I really liked the small classroom environment because it felt more personal and supportive. I also appreciated how close it was to home and the overall sense of comfort I felt while being on campus. From that moment, I could genuinely see myself growing both academically and personally.

What made you decide to apply and enroll at Founder’s College?
What made me decide to apply and enroll at Founder’s College was how admirable I found their message and overall mission. As a first-generation student, having access to a program that focuses on opportunity, support, and making higher education more accessible really stood out to me. I felt like Founder’s College truly understands students like me and wants to create an environment where we are encouraged to grow, succeed, and feel supported throughout our journey.

Another thing that caught my attention was the opportunity for internships and real-world experience while being in school. I liked that Founder’s College focuses not only on academics, but also on helping students prepare for their future careers and build professional connections early on. Originally, I wanted to study political science for my bachelor’s degree because I’ve always had a passion for politics and advocacy work. However, I also had to think realistically about financial stability and the job market. I knew I wanted a career path that would allow me to support myself while still leaving room to pursue my long-term goals. Pursuing business management felt like the best balance between passion and practicality because it gives me the opportunity to earn an associate degree, build connections, and hopefully land a stable job while continuing my education later on. If everything goes as planned, I hope to continue toward my bachelor’s degree and possibly even law school one day.

What do you hope to get involved with on campus?
I hope to get involved in organizations and opportunities that allow me to grow as a leader and make connections with others. Throughout high school, being involved in programs centered around leadership, advocacy, and community impact played a huge role in my growth, so I would love to continue being part of spaces where I can collaborate, network, and give back to the community.

What inspired you to study your major?
What inspired me to study Business Management Studies was my interest in becoming a business owner one day and wanting to build skills that will help me in any career path I choose. I recently earned my notary public license, which was a big step for me and made me even more interested in learning about professionalism, leadership, networking, and how businesses operate. While business management may not be my final end goal, I know it will give me valuable experience and skills that I can carry with me throughout my future career and personal goals.

What are you looking forward to most while being a student at Founder’s College?
What I’m looking forward to most is meeting new people, building connections, and gaining real-world experience through internships and opportunities on campus. As a first-generation student, starting this new chapter is both exciting and meaningful to me, and I’m looking forward to growing both personally and professionally while working toward my future goals.
