Where are you interning and how did you learn about the opportunity?
I am interning at Girls Rock! Indianapolis. I was part of the organization myself as a kid and had an amazing experience so working there is something I always wanted to do. They didn’t have any available internships, so I approached them with the idea to create one for me and they said, yes.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I work with teams of local women in the music industry to help young girls learn about the local scene and find their place in it. More recently I have been helping the organization find a location to hold their summer program, as their normal location was flooded over the winter.
How does this experience relate to your major?
I am a Music Industry Studies major, so this internship compliments my major nicely as it is directly related to the local music scene.
What do you like most about your internship?
My favorite part of my internship is knowing I will be helping other women to grow in the industry, or even simply begin their journey.
What has surprised you the most about this experience?
The most surprising thing about this experience so far has been how many people remember me from when I was involved in the program myself years ago. This has shown me that first impressions do matter, and they last.
What advice would you give another student who may be looking for an internship?
Think of things that do not exist yet. My internship is a perfect example of that! There is nothing wrong with asking an organization to consider allowing you to intern. The worst they can say is no.
