Where are you interning this summer and how did you learn about the opportunity?
I am interning at WISH-TV in Indianapolis. Former WISH-TV Digital Content Manager Kyle Bloyd spoke to one of my CCOM classes about his experiences at WISH. I was able to connect with him after class and he helped me to get connected with an application.
What do you do in your internship (day-to-day responsibilities)?
When I arrive at the station, my first task is to attend the morning meeting. In this meeting, stories are pitched and assignments are given out to the reporters. Following this, I connect with the reporter that I’d like to shadow for the day and help with any prep work before going out to the field. I help film things in the field and also write and edit my own version of the story to gain experience and then compare it to the reporter’s story to see where I can make improvements.
How does this experience relate to your major?
It’s like getting a glimpse into the future as I want to become a TV news reporter. I am learning new skills that will help me in my career such as how to use certain editing software. I am also using the work I create at WISH-TV for my reel to help me when I am looking for a job.
What has surprised you the most about this experience?
What has surprised me the most is that I love working the nightside shift—2:00–11:00 PM vs. the 9:00 AM–6:00 PM dayside shift.
What advice would you give another student who may be looking for an internship?
Network with Butler students and alumni who are working at organizations that interest you. Connecting with people in your field is a great way to build your network, gain career advice, and hopefully find a job.
