For more than 30 years, Butler has been awarding the Morton-Finney Diversity Scholars Program Award to students who have invested intentional time and energy in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in their schools or communities.

Why did you apply for the Morton-Finney Diversity Scholars Program?
I applied to the Morton-Finney Scholars Program to immerse myself in diverse environments that encourage openness to new experiences and foster welcoming interactions with people from various backgrounds. I believe this program would provide a unique platform to broaden my perspective and engage deeply with a community dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What have you gained as a member of the community within Morton-Finney and how has this program made you feel?
Being part of the Morton-Finney community has given me a profound understanding of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Participating in various events, both on and off campus, has allowed me to see these pillars in action. This experience has not only enriched my personal growth but also made me feel more connected and responsible for contributing positively to diverse communities.

What types of programs, events, or volunteering have you done during your time in the program?
During my time in the program, I have actively participated in several South Asian Student Association (SASA) events on campus, where I learned about and engaged with South Asian culture. My involvement with SASA deepened as I joined the board, where I now focus on organizing culturally diverse events that invite the broader student body to explore and engage with South Asian culture. Additionally, I have volunteered at the Sikh Satsang of Indianapolis, contributing to the weekly food service and teaching Punjabi – a language deeply rooted in our Punjabi culture and Sikh Religion.

What advice would you give to an applicant for the Morton-Finney Diversity Scholars Program?
My advice to applicants is to begin reflecting on their current volunteer work and community involvement. This self-reflection is crucial as it will help you smoothly transition into the monthly reflections required by the program, allowing you to draw meaningful insights from your experiences and continuously improve your contributions.
